Education & Experience

Hi, I’m AJ Frithiof (pronounced Fritch-off), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Oregon and Utah, and the founder of Pour Over Counseling. With a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) and a BS in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University (Gig 'Em!), I bring a unique blend of therapeutic expertise and experiential education to my practice.

Over the years, I’ve served as a Clinical Director and Therapist, working with adolescents and adults in wilderness and residential treatment settings. My experience also extends to roles as Program Director, Trainer, and Clinical Supervisor, where I’ve had the privilege of mentoring and shaping the next generation of therapists.

With nearly 20 years as an outdoor and experiential educator, I’ve spent countless days leading and supervising groups in the backcountry, blending the power of nature with therapeutic growth. I’ve worked across a wide spectrum of care, including psychiatric residential treatment, wilderness therapy, substance use disorder and dual diagnosis treatment, therapeutic boarding schools, and private practice. In each of these environments, I’ve developed and implemented new programming, including a 12-step recovery program for women, trained staff, and engaged in deep therapeutic work with clients.

On the personal side, I grew up on the beach in Pensacola, FL, and spent my post-college years living and working across the South. I didn’t fully appreciate the beauty of four seasons until I moved out West and fell in love with the seasons between the really hot and really cold. While I spent many years leading groups in the backcountry, I now consider myself a fair-weather adventurer. You can often find me whitewater kayaking or hiking during the hot months, or skiing and enjoying my annual dogsledding trip when the snow falls.

I’m also a passionate coffee enthusiast, savoring a good pour over whenever I can. As a true Southerner, I’m particular about my Coca-Cola being ice cold and my BBQ being just right. I’m an early riser who thrives on staying active, whether that’s spending time with friends and family, playing with my spirited Labrador, listening to audiobooks on 1.5x speed, WOD-ing, puzzling, or indulging in an afternoon nap.
